This High-Tech Handbag Interacts with NFC-Enabled Smartphones

NFC technology has yet to his the mainstream (though some research points to this year being an important one in its move towards wider adoption), but it’s at the center of many a geeky dream. Here’s one with a solidly stylish twist: Cherry on the Bag, a collection of leather bags and tech accessories imbedded with microchips that interact with NFC-enabled smartphones. You can scan the bags with your phone to access an online shop, information about the bag’s authenticity and its craftsperson and also find out where to return it should it be lost or stolen (if the finder happens to own an NFC-enabled phone and a conscience, of course).

While those features aren’t exactly earth-shattering on their own (I’m probably not going to use my handbag to buy another handbag, for example), the idea of a scan-able bag that interacts with a phone is, to my mind, not only unusual, but also compelling and speaks to what interesting types of high-functioning, yet fashionable accessories the future may bring.

Also, I like the lining.

If its Kickstarter campaign gets funded to the tune of $70K, the fashion startup hopes to ship bags come summer.
