I recently had the chance to try out Made Eyewear, an L.A.-based startup that lets you design your own eyeglasses and sunglasses and try them on using a web cam. They offered me a chance to try and buy a pair on them from the collection of frames ($84 and up) for girls and guys. Geek that I am for the twin joys of web cam-enhanced mass customization tools and fighting unnecessary glare, I said yes.
There are eight frame styles to choose from. You can check them out here. Land on one you like, and you can get an idea of how it will look on your face using the site’s web cam-enabled tool. That’s me
being a loser mugging for the cam below. Or something.
I left the above paragraph in the shot because I think it conveys a little of the company’s attitude: they’re casual, funny and not afraid to describe themselves as “more slick than an ice skating rink covered in oil.” I like that kind of swagger. Granted it should say “slicker than,” but this is a site about glasses, not grammar.
Once you’ve found the shape you want to work with, you can customize the color of the frames’ front and sides, add text and choose a lens. I don’t wear glasses, so note that I was purely playing with this as a tool for sunglasses. You can add a prescription to regular lenses for $5 and to sunglasses for $30.
As you can see from the shot below, you can choose to engrave words or a phrase on the outside or inside of the frames, and there are plenty of colors to choose from, including a tortoise option and a two-toned white and lime combo that I really liked.
After spending way (way) too much time messing with my frames, I settled on the two-tone design in Peggy, a slightly retro, rounded shape. I capped these off with the phrase “shady lady,” on the inside of the arm because I really wanted to test out the text feature and that was the best I could come up with that day.
When they arrived (in a nice case with a cleaning cloth and a handwritten note), they were just in time for San Francisco summer (a.k.a. fall everywhere else). If there was anything I’d put on my wish list for this site, it would be additional font options for the custom text. Can’t you just see “shady lady” in gold foil Old English letters? Kind of like a really hardcore neck tattoo
that I got once on spring break?
